There are only passing references to Orlando Bolivar Willcox, West Point Class of 1847, in standard histories of the Civil War. Yet he was on the field as a brave and competent commander at brigade, division and corps levels at many of the critical battles of the war - First Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and on to the end.
Such anonymity has been the fate of many who served honorably in the large landscape of the war. Willcox's fade-out in history gives the title "Forgotten Valor," edited by Robert Garth Scott, an unusual pungence. There is a second and intriguing appropriateness to the title, but more on that ...
