Saudi Arabia, covering about four-fifths of the vast Arabian Peninsula, is one of the countries with poorly defined borders. Its proven sedimentary terrain is believed to exceed 2 million sq km, excluding oil/gas rich territories where ownership is yet to be settled with Saudi Arabia's neighbours.

Rich structures extending into neighbouring countries have been in dispute since the Ottoman era. Sedimentation in these territories dates back to pre-Paleozoic ages and reservoirs are to be found in relatively younger source rocks (see geological profile following).
