Don Byron, once a New England Conservatory of Music student and currently among the most highly respected jazzmen to emerge in the '90s, has a new CD out, "Romance with the Unseen" (Blue Note). Byron has been able to receive attention even though he's not a commercial jazz artist or a reactionary "young lion." He's perceived as a cutting-edge musician, but "Romance," as well as his previous album "NuBlaxploitation," call into question his image as an avant gardist, and may cause some to wonder where he's headed.
