The Publick Theatre has opened its 29th season on the banks of the Charles River along Soldiers Field Road with a poverty-row production of "The Yeoman of the Guard," one of Gilbert and Sullivan's late operettas.
The designers have fared better than the directing team in making do. In particular, Brent Wachter has fitted the expansive outdoor stage with an impressive mock-up of the Tower of London, silhouetted against the evening sky.
But for all the expertise of Bob Jolly, the local Gilbert and Sullivan expert who directs the show and plays a leading role, and the musical passion of Jonathan Goldberg, the audience is left wanting more. Not even ...
