Dear Dr. John: In another month I will be getting a new dog. I plan on getting a Shih Tzu or Maltese. I am told that Shih Tzus have breathing problems, so if I get this breed, will the summer heat be bad for my pet?
If it's really hot, should I keep the dog inside? If his paws hit the pavement, can the animal overheat? - M.S.
Dear M.S.: Shih Tzus do have short faces and occasionally suffer from minor breathing difficulties. This should make almost no difference during summer heat waves if the dog is kept cool. Shih Tzus have long ...
