With the arrival in Boston next week of the so-called alpha bitch of the new breed of angry young women rockers, let's examine the state of equal-opportunity whining in American rock.

Alanis Morissette - who performs Monday at the FleetCenter - hit the airwaves in 1995 with "You Oughta Know," a self-pity-fueled tribute to a failed love affair, rendered in the sort of raw harpy screech that makes grown men duck and cover or hide the kids' bunny.

There are lines we can print: "Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity? I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner. It was a slap in the face, how quickly I was replaced." And lines we can't.
