To many, port conjures up images of British gentlemen savoring cigars and a sip in the drawing room, or perhaps of the butler serving pears and Stilton while pouring the 1927 or the more recently acclaimed 1963.
Yes, vintage port - the kind that comes from a legal area in Portugal and is made only in certain so-called "declared" years - is a high-class, expensive drink. Even the relatively recent 1963 now carries a $250 price tag, while older vintages demand at least double that. If purchased young, vintage port has another drawback: It must be cellared by the consumer for many years before reaching its admittedly heavenly maturity.
