HALLANDALE, Fla. - If the winner's clocking in yesterday's $750,000 Florida Derby was an accurate measure of any Kentucky Derby credentials, Vicar won't be taken very seriously by bettors at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.
The 1:50 4/5 it took Vicar to fight off Wondertross by a nose may seem a bit slow for 1-1/8 miles until one is reminded he is trained by Carl Nafzger, who saddled Unbridled for victory in the 1990 Kentucky Derby after capturing the Florida Derby in 1:52.
Vicar's victory may not have been stunningly fast, but it was another solid step toward the Kentucky Derby for the late-developing colt.
