TORONTO -- It took 88 at-bats, but Jason Varitek chose perfect timing last night to tally his first home run of the season.
With the Red Sox up 2-0 in the seventh inning and Jeff Frye on first base, Varitek smacked David Wells' first pitch 373 feet over the wall in left field to put the Red Sox up, 4-0, in a game that wound up 5-0 in the Red Sox' favor at Fenway Park. Two innings before his blast, Varitek knocked in the first run of a scoreless game with a ground-rule double.
