"My goal is make every school equal," Menino said, following up his call for five new schools during his State of the City Address.

That would help the city move toward neighborhood schools by ensuring there are quality schools in every neighborhood, Menino said.

But the city has no sites for the new schools, no physical plans nor any timetable, Menino acknowledged. Five new schools would cost at least $60 million.

Opponents of neighborhood schools said the mayor is heading in the wrong direction.

City Councilor Charles Yancey said it's sad that Menino is preocuppied with neighborhood schools.
