Fort Myers, Fla., used to be just another Sunshine State winter beach getaway for the relative handful of New England snowbirds who headed there each year. But since becoming the preseason training home of the Boston Red Sox in 1993, Fort Myers has become synonymous in Boston with spring, high hopes and shattered dreams.
Hundreds of Bostonians - and hundreds more travelers from around New England - will make the trek to witness the annual rite of spring, when bored veteran players and bright-eyed newcomers take to the field to get ready for the coming baseball season.
