A French medical research team conducted a multicenter controlled study of 136 adults (mean age, 27 years) who suffer from grass-pollen allergies (as confirmed through testing and clinical history). The investigators tested the effectiveness of sublingual immunotherapy, using a standardized grass-pollen extract, in diminishing the patients' rhinoconjunctivitis. In sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), the patient holds the extract under the tongue (for a prescribed period) and then swallows it. It is an alternative to subcutaneous injection.
