Nov. 1 -- Florida State University's developing plan for a new medical school is proving to be less costly the second time around, said Provost Larry Abele.

If the Legislature approves the regents' request for $20.2 million to further expand the sciences, Abele estimates only about $35 million more will be needed to begin a medical school. That's a sharp drop from the $220-million-plus figure that halted lawmakers' discussion of a possible medical school last session.

The $35 million would be used to complete a basic sciences building.
