NEW DELHI - When Pope John Paul II arrives in New Delhi today, he will attract more than the usual flock of Roman Catholic faithful.
His visit is the focal point of an increasingly hostile faceoff in India between Hindu revivalists and their Christian rivals, who are locked in an epic battle of the faiths.
The Hindu groups accuse Christian missionaries of stepping up their activities in remote rural areas in a bid to win millions more converts by 2000. Leaders say the purported campaign threatens the future of the world's only Hindu-majority nation.
