In 1954, Robert Anthony graduated high school, and set out to find a job. After a visit to the state employment office, he faced two choices.

"I came out of high school in 1954, totally inexperienced," Mr. Anthony said. "While I followed an academic/scientific course and achieved the honor of class valedictorian, it did not automatically translate into an assured college education. Jobs were not very plentiful at all. I went to the state employment office. One of the two jobs that was open was for a lab assistant position at American Lacquer Solvents Co. (ALS); the other was for a production position at the 6 O'Clock Pudding Plant."
