As the holiday season draws near, our thoughts turn to twinkling lights, tinsel-covered trees, mouth-watering dinners and family gatherings. Unfortunately, the scene doesn't look that rosy for the 10 percent of Massachusetts men, women and children who live below the poverty line. For them, the holidays are simply another jarring reminder of the gap between those who have and those who have not.
But there are many opportunities for you to extend a caring hand. Starting in the next two weeks, local nonprofit organizations will begin their holiday season activities, which require countless volunteers to fill hundreds of positions.
