From another ardent reader and an old retired fire chief the letter entitled Ready then, ready now from Judith Richardson Haralson on page 25 of the March/April 1999 issue mentions possibly more in seriousness than in jest that she "cashed in a lifetime of stocks and bonds and stuffed the mattress!"

Please, don't put these important papers and extra money in (or under) the mattress, even if Y2K doesn't affect your area. The reason is simple: What happens in case of fire ?

(Editor's note: We regarded "stuffing the mattress" as a figure of speech. Fire or not, who wants to sleep on a lumpy mattress?)
