T.R. Coe, a member of the department of anaesthetics in Torbay Hospital (Devon, UK) tested the effect of acupuncture on pain and swelling after the extraction of molar teeth. Forty outpatients who were having extractions performed under general anesthesia were randomly assigned to two groups: one which received acupuncture before and during general anesthesia and the other which received general anesthesia alone. Pain was measured through visual analogue scores in the recovery room and two, 18 and 72 hours after the oral surgery. Each patient's swelling and mouth opening were also observed.
