Nortel Networks Tuesday introduced new distributed software for routing called Open IP Environment. Nortel will license this software to other companies.
Open IP Environment moves routing functions of router hardware and into various devices in the network, including PCs, servers, set-top boxes and personal digital assistants, speeding up the Internet, Nortel says. Open IP Environment covers IP functions such as routing, authentication, security, encapsulation and tunneling, as well as applications such as policy and network management and accounting.
