There is a good reason to turn on the television tonight. Correction, there is an excellent reason. PBS is broadcasting the latest installment in its award-winning "The Living Edens" series, "Canyonlands: America's Wild West," from 8 to 9 p.m. on WETA (Channel 26). It is one glorious hour of superbly planned and brilliantly photographed documentary.
The canyonlands cover about 40,000 square miles of southeastern Utah. A long time ago, the area was a sea bottom covered by layers of sediment. Various geological activity heaved it here and there until it was exposed and the sea vanished. Then wind and water went to work.
