The Navy is upgrading its Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) in Monterey, Calif., with two new supercomputer systems that will greatly enhance the Navy's operational weather and oceanographic information capabilities.
The Navy facility has already received the SGI Origin 2000 supercomputer made by Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) in Mountain View, Calif. The system is expected to be fully operational by January.
This SGI Origin 2000 will be used until about January 2001, or until the more advanced Scaleable Node 1 supercomputer by SCI is operational, Paul Moersdorf, FNMOC's scientific and technical ...
