Villagers in Ethiopia still burst with pride remembering the day their parents and grandparents defeated the Italians.
It is this battle that Washington filmmaker Haile Gerima brings to life in his newest release, "Adwa: An African Victory." Premiering today at the Lincoln Theatre, "Adwa" highlights an Ethiopian triumph overlooked in history books: How, in 1896, Ethiopians across the empire united as one army under Emperor Menelik II and his wife, Empress Taitu , against the Italians in the Battle of Adwa.
"It is a major event, but very underplayed not only to other people, but even to myself," says Mr. Gerima, a native of Ethiopia.
