Nov. 22 -- The agencies that help people sort out their financial problems are struggling with serious money troubles of their own.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service agencies, stung by unexpected funding cuts, are overhauling their services and trying to make their offices more efficient.

In the short run, consumers may benefit from some of the changes. But in the long run, the nonprofits warn, counseling offices may have to merge or even close.

Free or low-cost community education might be sacrificed.
