The U.S.-Mexico border is home to 24 counties (on the U.S. side) and 39 municipalities (in Mexico) that, regardless of political boundaries, are interdependent. The population of the southwestern portion of the U.S. and the northern part of Mexico is roughly 69.5 million people; according to the latest estimates, close to 11 million people live in counties and cities immediately on the border (4.3 million south of the border, 6.7 million in the United States.)
