Conservationists are accusing federal authorities of approving an inadequate habitat plan to protect the endangered Delmarva fox squirrel from the effects of a residential development in Queen Anne's County, Maryland.
In a lawsuit filed in U.S. district court in Washington, D.C., this September, Defenders of Wildlife and John "Ned" Gerber, a local conservationist, charge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) sanctioned a plan that does little to mitigate the effects on the squirrels from the Homeport Development project, comprising 16 buildings on 56 acres of rural land.
