White rhinos have gone from near extinction to auction item in South Africa. A look at wildlife conservation in the modern world.
On the grounds of Umfolozi Game Reserve in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, 33 endangered white rhinos rest in their wooden bomas--pens that they've called home for the past few weeks. Signs on each boma give the animal's identification number, tell where and when it was captured, list what it should and shouldn't eat, and convey other essentials the behemoths' keepers need to know. Today, rhino number 41 lies in the morning sun munching hay, impervious to the men and women who peer through the wooden slats to catch his gaze.
