Angola's rebel movement UNITA, in retreat from strongholds it has held since the end of the Cold War, has decided to revert to guerrilla war in the hope that it can salvage something from its 25-year struggle, said a source close to UNITA.
"Last month, it became clear that we were outgunned; we decided to fall back and wage a low-intensity conflict," the source told The Washington Times this week.
"At Andulo and Bailundo, the government brought in about 80 T-72 tanks and a number of Sukhoi-27 fighters it bought from Eastern Europe. So we decided not to fight there," said the source, who insisted on anonymity.
