Viral Exanthems
Although much of the information about summertime rashes discussed by Dr. Karen Wiss was interesting to read, I felt that there were some errors in the article ("Childhood Exanthems Will Catch on This Summer," May 1, 1999, p. 17).
Dr. Wiss said the rashes that are caused by enteroviral infections vary widely and that the key in these infections is to rule out meningococcemia by performing a lumbar puncture and culturing rectal or throat swabs for the virus.
