VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. -- Most cases of jaundice, gastroesophageal reflux, and constipation in infants can be handled by the primary care physician.
These common disorders generally are benign and resolve spontaneously, but rare cases need to be referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. V. Marc Tsou said at the annual meeting of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians.
He offered these suggestions for managing the three disorders:
* Jaundice. "While most of what you see in practice is physiologic, or normal run-of-the-mill jaundice, you cannot distinguish indirect from direct hyperbilirubinemia just by observing the child," said Dr. Tsou ...
