SAN FRANCISCO -- Several studies have shown that high maternal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyl is associated with a mean 5- to 6-point decrement in full-scale IQ in children, Dr. David 0. Carpenter said at a pediatric environmental health conference sponsored by the Children's Environmental Health Network.
This may be mediated in part by thyroid function interference by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). An ongoing study in Mohawk youths shows a strong inverse linear relationship between serum PCB and thyroid hormone levels, said Dr. Carpenter, professor of environmental health and toxicology at State University of New York, Albany.
