BETHESDA, MD. -- Moderate exercise can probably help prevent osteoarthritis or alleviate symptoms, despite the traditional view that it is a wear-and-tear disease exacerbated by exercise.
That was the consensus of speakers who participated in a conference on osteoarthritis sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
The old theory still has merit if exercise is too strenuous, some of the speakers said. Prolonged high-impact exercise, use of malaligned joints, or exercise-related injuries are still believed to increase the risk of developing osteoarthritis.
