Milk thistle, long touted by herbalists as a remedy for liver disease, has shown promise in preliminary studies, said Dr. Peter Ferenci of the University of Vienna.
In his prospective study of 170 patients with cirrhosis, mortality was significantly lower in patients who were randomized to take a daily dosage of 140 mg silymarin (milk thistle extract) than in patients who took a placebo, according to Dr. Ferencei.
