Nov. 26 -- NEW CONFLICT AT THE NEW REPUBLIC: The New Republic's latest boy wonder, 28-year-old top editor Pete Beinart, may want to have a word with the gray beards around the place. The national weekly's longtime literary editor, Leon Wieseltier, has raised lots of eyebrows by assigning a review of celebrity historian Simon Schama's massive "Rembrandt's Eyes"(Knopf) to a close colleague of Schama's at Columbia University, art history professor David Freedberg.
In his acknowledgements, Schama profusely thanks Freedberg -- and Wieseltier. Yet rather than recuse himself from making the review assignment and hand the job ...
