Sen. John McCain's dismal showing in the latest poll in South Carolina, a state he has said he must win, could bring a quick end in February to his challenge to Texas Gov. George W. Bush in the Republican presidential primary.
"You don't want to get overconfident or assume anything," said David Wilkins, co-chairman of Mr. Bush's South Carolina campaign. "But things certainly look good."
Asked if a loss in South Carolina on Feb. 19 would doom Mr. McCain's campaign, Mr. Wilkins, speaker of the state House, said, "I agree with that assessment."
