Regulations requiring the use of nontoxic shot extend far beyond the world of waterfowling. Both state and federal regulators now require nontoxic shot for general upland game hunting on National Wildlife Refuges, Waterfowl Production Areas, and numerous state wildlife management areas. The greatest impact of non-toxic regulations has been felt in the central and upper Midwest states where over 2 million acres of mixed habitat suitable for upland game hunting are classified as Waterfowl Production Areas.
