A SENATE COMMITTEE will delay action until next year on a controversial bill that would extend patents for Claritin, the nation's best-selling prescription allergy medication, and seven other drugs.
At the request of Sen. Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.), the bill,s chief sponsor, the Senate Judiciary Committee is postponing a vote on the measure. Sen Torricelli says that the end-of-the-year rush to adjourn makes it impossible to debate the legislation properly.
"The bill will be put off until Congress returns next year," says a spokesman for the senator, adding "it would require more time and attention than would be allowed by the schedule."
