INTRIGUED BY BEBOP sounds? One classic bop technique involves playing augmented arpeggios laced with passing tones. Charlie Parker, Horace Silver, and Wes Montgomery are among those who worked this spiky texture into their lines.
Augmented connections. Try Ex. 1, a phrase built around Gaug arpeggios (G, B, D [Sharp]) that are enhanced with neighboring notes (F [Sharp], A, and E) from the key of G. The resulting intervals have an ambivalent, ironic quality that goes to the core of the bop sensibility. Notice the three chords at the end of the phrase: Em/maj9, which is Em9 with a 7, instead of a normal [Flat] 7; Gmaj7with a raised 5 (Gmaj7 [Sharp] 5); and A13 with ...
