On November 24, the European Commission submitted to the Standing Veterinary Committee a proposal for a decision on certain preventive measures aimed at combating African swine fever in Portugal, after a new outbreak on November 15 near Almodovar, in the South of the country. Accordingly, the export of live pigs to other Member States will be prohibited until January 31, 2000 for animals from an area delimited by 13 Alentejo communes and three Algarve communes. However, such animals will be able to be exported under stringent conditions of clinical examination (programme of tests) and of transport to the slaughterhouses.
