Dec. 4 -- SEATTLE -- The struggle to launch a new round of global trade talks was so torturous and complex that many sleepless delegates talked Friday of junking the way the World Trade Organization does business.
"It would take a magician to sort out this mess," said European Union Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy.
The Seattle ministerial meeting of the trade organization staggered toward its Friday night finish line with many delegates in the dark about what was going on, despite the fact that the rules call for consensus among all 135 member-nations before new trade negotiations can be launched.
