The phrase on the spine of this volume, 'A Working Facsimile', is surprising. It first appeared in The Ellesmere Manuscript (Cambridge: Brewer, 1989) where it accurately described the status of the facsimile, as booksellers use 'reading copy' for a usable but less than perfect book.
