Andre Jarry's admirably detailed and extensive work traces, chronologically, the evolution of Alfred de Vigny's literary career from 1820 to his death in 1863. Jarry's sound critical stance, admitting both textual stylistics and textual psychoanalysis, and, later, a justifiable shift to philosophical considerations on the divine dimension of the human being, centres on the 'auteur dans le texte' as opposed to the 'auteur hors texte'.
