These twenty-two papers (five in French, two in English, the rest in German) were delivered at an interdisciplinary conference in Luxembourg in October 1994 and now appear under a not wholly transparent title. For 'Jewish identity' may describe how Jews positively identify themselves, or, following Sartre's statement that 'the Jew is one whom other men consider a Jew', it may describe the identity forced upon them by the surrounding Gentile community.
