With this volume, Roderick MacFarquhar completes his monumental trilogy on the decade (1956-66) leading to the Cultural Revolution in China. Although the first volume appeared in 1974 and the second in 1983, this much anticipated third volume did not reach publication until 1997. The delay is understandable given MacFarquhar's other duties, and the flood of new material with which he had to deal.
