S.P. Mackenzie has produced a stimulating collection of essays. The modern era here ranges from the English Civil War to Vietnam and includes forces that fought in European, American, Asian, and African wars. His choice of "revolutionary armies" is eclectic and idiosyncratic. Voortrekkers, the Taipings, Sepoys, and Waffen SS join the New Model Army, the Continental Army, the Army of the First French Republic, Simon Bolivar's forces, the International Brigades in Spain, and the Vier Cong.
