Over the years, there have been many pretenders to the throne of the ubiquitous and apparently eternal magnetic-tape recorder. Optical tapes and disks, solid-state memories (FLASH and DRAM), holography and even pond scum have been assigned tentative "holy grail" status from time to time (see "Data Storage and the Coming Millennium," JED, May 1998, p. 51). Within the signals intelligence (SIGINT) community, however, few commentators have tipped the humble computer disk as a possible contender. Yet that seems increasingly to be the case.
