This Information Bulletin presents statistics on designated Green Belt land in England. It relates to the extent of Green Belt in 1997 and is based on a new methodology involving the capture of digitised Green Belt boundaries from proposal maps in development plans to establish the extent of Green Belt in each local authority. This approach provides more reliable figures than those previously published for earlier years.

In 1997, Green Belts amounted to 1,652,300 hectares, about 13 per cent of the land area of England. ...
