Minnesota farmers integrate
Nearly a year after spot prices hit $10/cwt., small hog farmers have integrated in western Minnesota. Formed more than a year ago, the Prairie Farmers Cooperative broke ground Nov. 18 on a $5.8 million, 50,000-head-per-year packing plant in Dawson, Minn. Upside potential is 65,000 head per year. The "closed cooperative" was formed by approximately 50 producers in five counties 80 miles west of the Twin Cities.
