JERUSALEM, Dec. 13 (UPI)
Israel's Parliament on Monday night gave Prime Minister Ehud Barak a lukewarm endorsement on the eve of his departure for peace talks in Washington with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa.
After a seven-hour debate, the Knesset (parliament) said it ``encourages the prime minister in his trip,'' but only 47 legislators voted for that resolution. Thirty-one voted against it, and 24 abstained.
The vote showed fissures in Barak's coalition. Three parties had reservations about or downright opposed the renewed negotiations because they entail a withdrawal from the strategic Golan Heights, captured by Israel ...
