Q What is the strategy for the banking sector in 1995 and how do you see the prospects for the banks?
A The commercial banks face various challenges, some to do with structural shortcomings in the banking sector relating to the past and other challenges from the present circumstances. Banks have to become more efficient and to reduce their operating costs; they have done a lot in this regard and the improvement is remarkable. Most have reduced their staff considerably, the large banks particularly, but there is more to be done.
