Americans United's 1999 National Conference on Church and State featured thought-proving panels and rousing speeches. But it wasn't all work. On Sunday evening, Oct. 31, attendees gathered to salute some special champions of church-state separation during AU's Religious Liberty Awards Banquet.

Americans United bestowed its Madison-Jefferson Award, the organization's highest honor, on two longtime friends of the group -- the Rev. James Dunn, recently retired executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs, and the Rev. Calvin Didier, retired senior pastor of the House of Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul.
